Each document serves a specific purpose during the buying, selling, or storage of a firearm.

SAPS 271 – FIREARM LICENCE APPLICATION


The SAPS 271 is the official application form used when a buyer applies for a firearm licence.

This form is supplied by the seller and is issued:

  • By a private seller for a private firearm sale;
  • By a registered firearm dealer when the firearm is dealer-stocked;
  • Together with a SAPS 350a (Firearm Transfer and Registration Application).

Once completed, the form is submitted to the buyer’s local Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) as part of the licence application process.

SAPS 534 – DEALER STOCK APPLICATION


The SAPS 534 is used when a privately owned firearm is being placed into dealer stock.

To complete this process, you must:

  • Complete the SAPS 534 form.
  • Submit the original firearm licence with your application.
  • Lodge the documents through the registered firearms dealer.

Once approved, the firearm is transferred into the dealer’s stock and may be sold under dealer stock regulations.

SAPS 539 – PERMISSION TO STORE THE FIREARM


The SAPS 539 is an application for permission to store a firearm while the licence remains in the name of the current owner.

Important information:

  • Applicable only to private firearm transactions.
  • Your local Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) must approve this storage permit.
  • Not applicable to firearms that are dealer-stocked.

This authorisation allows the firearm to be legally stored during the transfer or licence application process.
